Officials who share fake videos could face charges

Government officials, who shared an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated video of a student opposing the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, can face charges.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro made the remark on Monday when asked if officials can be charged with libel or slander.

"It depends on the situation. If they comment on it, there is a penalty attached to it. It depends on their participation," she said in Filipino in a press briefing.

Last weekend, two officials allegedly shared a video of students, who slammed the authorities for singling out the Vice President for the misuse of the confidential funds of the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education (DepEd). Experts claim the video is a fake.

Castro regretted the involvement of government officials in spreading AI-generated false information.

"It further erodes trust when disinformation and fake news come from high-ranking officials," she said. DMS
