Aquino said it is better to maintain strong ties with US

Former President Benigno Aquino III said Friday it's better for the Philippines to maintain its strong ties with the United States, an opinion contrary to what is being pursued by his successor, President Rodrigo Duterte.

Aquino, in a TV interview over GMA News, said it's important for the country to have an alliance with a nation where it has a common traits.

"It's important there is a common background, common values and common orientation. How can we be partners if we don't share the same views?," said Aquino.

Aquino made the remarks after visiting the Thai Embassy in Makati City where he signed the book of condolences for the passing of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Duterte has been critical of the US since he became president last July, spewing tirades over Washington's policies. In his recent visit in China, Duterte announced he was separating from the US militarily and economically although he later clarified it was mainly a pursuit of an independent foreign policy.

Aquino said there are similarities with the government structure of the two countries, a reason according to Aquino the US is much easier to work with.

"There is a strategic partnership. When I arrived, there are two, one with America and Japan," said Aquino.

Aquino said he also pursued an independent foreign policy during his time with the point of finding the best for the interest of the Filipino.

Aquino declined to say anything on Duterte's policies and style of governance, saying he wants the president to succeed.

"I try my best not to talk about his style because I know how hard the job is," said Aquino
