Philippines reports sixth Zika virus case since 2012

The Philippines reported that a woman tested positive of the Zika virus over the weekend, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

In an interview, Undersecretary Gerardo Bayugo said a 45-year-old woman from Iloilo City had been found positive of the Zika virua after laboratory tests.

Bayugo said the case appeared to have been acquired locally as the woman has no record of having traveled abroad recently.

Eric Tayag, DOH spokesman, said the woman was confined for one day at a local hospital before being sent some where she is recovering.

This is the sixth case of the Zika virus, which is transmitted through bites from the Aedes aegypti mosquito and sexual transmission, in the Philippines since 2012. .

Symptoms include fever, skin rash, joint pains, and conjunctivitis but is usually mild with these lasting 2-7 days.

Tayag said it is “highly likely” the transmission is local. DMS
