PNP says it will reject calls by retired military, police for coup against Marcos

The acting head of the Philippine National Police (PNP) said he will reject calls by retired military or police officials for a coup against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez said Monday it was Marcos who revealed massive corruption in flood control projects during his State of the Nation Address last July.

His announcement came after Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr said he rejected calls from some retired military officers who urged that they oust Marcos from office.

“He said to put a stop of corruption especially that caused the flooding in Metro Manila and nearby provinces and even sa lahat. So, what’s the basis?” he said.

Nartatez assured the public the morale of the police force is high.

As the organizers of the “Trillion Peso March” are staging another major protest on Nov. 30, Bonifacio Day, Nartatez said they have measures to ensure the rallies would be peaceful.

“We are rationalizing or improving our templates in these kinds of activities,” he said.

Anti-corruption rallies on Sept. 21, particularly in Manila were marred in violence that left two people dead and hundreds injured. DMS
