Senator says let the process take its course as Upper Chamber set to tackle SC impeachment ruling

Three days before the Senate will discuss whether to follow a Supreme Court decision calling the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte as unconstitutional, a senator said it could be better to let the legal process take its course.

''I respect the rule of law, let the process takes its course,'' Senator Loren Legara told dzBB on Sunday.

''There are different interpretations of the Constitution. We may agree or disagree with the Supreme Court ruling that is why I respect the ruling of the SC. There was a motion for reconsideration that was filed. We'll take it from there,'' she added.

Senate President Francis Escudero called for the Upper Chamber to discuss how the Senate should proceed after the SC voted 13-0 to rule the impeachment complaint.

Last Saturday, the House of Representatives called on the Senate to wait for their motion for reconsideration before taking any action on the impeachment case of Duterte, emphasizing that the Supreme Court's decision is not yet final.

In a statement, House spokesperson Princess Abante said: ''We express deep concern over reports that the Senate may vote to act on the Supreme Court decision regarding the impeachment case against the Vice President?without waiting for the House of Representatives to exhaust its available legal remedies.”

“Let us be clear: the decision of the Supreme Court is not yet final. The House of Representatives, as the body vested by the Constitution with the exclusive power and authority to initiate an impeachment, will file a Motion for Reconsideration soon. This is a matter of constitutional right and institutional integrity,” she added. DMS
