The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued a tsunami warning over 22 coastal provinces in the eastern side of the country following the magnitude 8.7 earthquake in Russia on Wednesday.
The 22 coastal provinces include Batanes Group of Islands, Albay, Dinagat Islands, Cagayan, Sorsogon, Surigao del Norte, Isabela, Catanduanes, Surigao del Sur, Aurora, Northern Samar, Davao del Norte, Quezon, Eastern Samar, Davao Oriental, Camarines Norte, Leyte, Davao Occidental, Camarines Sur, Southern Leyte, Davao del Sur and Davao de Oro.
Phivolcs advised the public to stay away from the beach while those who were living near the shoreline were advised to "move farther inland" as tsunami wave heights of less than one meter are expected to be experienced between 1:20 pm to 2:40 pm.
"Owners of boats in harbors, estuaries or shallow coastal waters of the above-mentioned provinces should secure their boats and move away from the waterfront. Boats already at sea during this period should stay offshore in deep waters until further advised," it stated.
As of 4:40 pm, the tsunami advisory was cancelled as "no significant sea level disturbance nor destructive tsunami waves have been recorded since the 07:25 am earthquake". Robina Asido/DMS
