Over 100 individuals were affected by floods after a dike collapsed in Navotas City on Saturday morning.
In a phone interview with the Daily Manila Shimbun, Navotas Public Information Officer Irish Cubillan said that the damaged dike at Celest Street in Barangay San Jose was an old wall of a shipyard, which has an indicated notice for demolition and repair.
The authorities said the damaged dike caused a flood as deep as four feet. ??
According to the Navotas City Social Welfare and Development Office (NCSWDO), there were 30 displaced families consisting of 121 individuals as of 5 pm.
Twenty-two families or 87 individuals were staying in Navotas Elementary School 1, while eight families, consisting of 34 individuals, were taking temporary shelter at their barangay hall.
Cubillan said immediate assistance, such as food and other essentials, was provided to the affected families.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the City Engineering Office will install sandbags in the area as soon as water subsides.
"We need to install sandbags to prevent the river water from coming in due to high tide," Cubillan said. Kate Christian Ravelo/DMS
