History cannot be erased: Palace spokesperson

2025/2/26 英字

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. cannot erase history, the Palace said, noting that the government's decision not to declare February 25 as a non-working holiday is not a move to erase the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution from the memories of Filipinos.

"Since he became a president, we never heard him order to stop any events, and activities to commemorate that event (the People Power Revolution) and at the same time, let's pay attention on how history can be erased? History is history. So, a president cannot erase our history," Palace Press Officer and Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro told reporters in the Palace on Tuesday.

"If there is the intention to erase the memories of EDSA People Power, a different method will be used", she added.

It is the second time in the present administration that the anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution which led to the ouster of late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. in 1986 is not declared a holiday.

However, Castro said February 25 was declared as a special working day to show that the government is not hindering the commemoration of the EDSA People Power and to encourage Filipinos to join such activities.

"February 25 is declared a special working day and I think it is the prerogative of the President. And when we say special working day, still there is encouragement to people to commemorate, to join any event and it will not hinder any activity to commemorate the EDSA People Power," she explained.

"We declared it as a special working day but it is considered just a regular working day. But, what’s the purpose of a special working day? It’s to encourage people to join any event if they need to commemorate an affair," she added. Robina Asido/DMS
