Outgoing Manila Mayor Joseph Ejercito "Erap" Estrada on Tuesday conceded to incumbent Vice Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso after losing the mayoral race with 210,605 votes.

"The people of Manila have spoken. The new leadership of the city will be coming in and I will prepare the smooth turnover of the city government," Estrada said in an official statement.

"By June 30, my 50 years in politics and public service will come to an end with sterling colors of honesty and genuine concerns for the poor," added the former Philippine president.

Estrada congratulated the incoming mayor for winning the polls and wished for the best to Moreno and the people of Manila.

He mentioned his achievements during his term as mayor, including paying the city's P4.4 billion debt he inherited after he dethroned former Mayor Alfredo Lim in 2013.

Estrada said that as he steps down, he will leave an ample funds to be used by the next mayor to improve the city.

"The city was bankrupt (when I was elected as mayor0. As my term ends, I will leave funds for the city worth P14 billion which came from disciplined leadership and mindful spending of the people's money," Estarda shared.

"There's always life after politics," he added. Cristina Eloisa Baclig/DMS
