More than 80,000 persons in have been displaced by monsoon rains which could last up to Friday, officials said

The National Risk Reduction and Management Council said 80,467 displaced persons were mostly in central Luzon, National Capital Region, Calabarzon and the Negros Island Region.

In a report, the council said 50, 592 persons were housed in 104 evacuation centers.

At least five persons were reported dead from the rains which started in the middle of last week due to two low pressure areas but Romina Marasigan, spokesperson of the council, said they are verifying reports of one died and five were missing in a tunnel at a town in Quezon Province.

President Rodrigo Duterte went on a 15-20 minute aerial inspection of areas in Metro Manila which were affected by monsoon rains, state television PTV 4 reported. These included the Marikina and Pasig Rivers, along with the La Mesa Dam.

Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo and council executive director Ricardo Jalad briefed Duterte on the status of the 19,000 families in the 104 evacuation centers.

Duterte ordered concerned government agencies to make the public’s safety a priority and ensure supply of relief and family packs. Robina Asido and Celerina Monte
