Dizon replaces Bonuan as public works secretary

2025/9/1 英字

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr accepted the resignation of Public Works Secretary Manny Bonuan effective Sept 1, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said Sunday.

Assuming the post will be Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, PCO added. Giovanni Lopez, a transport undersecretary, will be acting transportation secretary, PCO added.

''Secretary Dizon has been tasked to conduct a full organizational sweep of the Department and ensure that public funds are used solely for infrastructure that truly protects and benefits the Filipino people,'' PCO said.

Bonuan's resignation came after weeks of investigation by the Senate into so-called ghost flood control projects and the discovery of Marcos himself of what he described as wasted projects in the north.

Dizon is expected to take his oath of office before Marcos on Monday once Bonoan's resignation takes effect.

''The President made both a hard decision and a good choice in Secretary Vince Dizon to replace a beleaguered DPWH secretary,'' said Senator Panfilo Lacson Jr., who delivered a privilege speech on alleged corruption in flood control projects.

''I have watched and followed Vince Dizon’s indefatigable, almost daily effort to solve the numerous problems that beset the transportation sector. I can only wish him Godspeed and more importantly, good health, '' added Lacson.

Heavy rains from recent typhoons and the southwest monsoon which caused severe flooding in Metro Manila and other provinces sparked the investigation by the Upper Chamber, which is to deliberate on the 2026 national budget starting Monday, especially the earmarked P243 billion flood control fund.

Bonuan told the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee on August 17 that ghost projects exist in Bulacan, though he did not detail these. DMS
