Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla said doctors found out he had leukemia after he underwent quintuple bypass surgery in June 2023.
In a YouTube interview with broadcast journalist Luchi Cruz-Valdez on Friday, Remulla said: ''When I was recovering, I was diagnosed with having leukemia, cancer of the blood.''
Remulla said he underwent two cycles of chemotherapy, total body irradiation and a bone marrow transplant from his son. He did not say when it happened.
''I recovered and the prognosis looks good,'' said Remulla.
Remulla, one of the first Cabinet members appointed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr in 2022, ran the justice department until less than two months ago when he was appointed Ombudsman.
In his new post, Remulla is the helm of investigating the flood control projects scandal, where billions of pesos were reportedly squandered by public works department officials, lawmakers and contractors.
He has vowed that suspects will be charged before the Sandiganbayan and the courts speedily. DMS
