Sara says a country '' will accept'' her father if ICC grants interim release

Vice President Sara Duterte confirmed that there is a country that is willing to host his former President Rodrigo Duterte should the International Criminal Court (ICC) grant his counsel's request for an interim release.

The vice president refused to name the country and gave further details about it.

"There is a country who says that they will accept former President Rodrigo Duterte but I cannot say where it is," she said in a press conference on Monday.

As she once again raised concern about the condition of her father, the vice president noted that she wanted the interim release of the former president to be in Davao City.

"For me, I want it to be in Davao City, Philippines. Even if it’s house arrest, even if his house arrest is in a bunker, there’s no problem with us, we will comply," she said.

"In fact, I think it would be even better if his interim release be granted because we can encourage him to cooperate in the trial or hearings if there are any... You know, our word of honor in the family is important to us," she added.

Duterte also claimed that the ICC did not inform them whenever there is something that happened to the former president, noting an incident where he was brought to the hospital after he was found unconscious on the floor of his detention facility.

"The family members were not informed about that incident, we were just informed by the hospital personnel, because there are a lot of Filipinos in any part of the world, so it was the hospital personnel who informed us," she said.

"I asked my father if that’s true. He said that it was not the first time that he fell," Duterte added as she expressed belief that ICC does not have full control of the safety and security of the former president.

“Keeping him in without a trial date, without a date for confirmation of charges is just plain cruelty. They torture the person and keep him detained as if he was imprisoned without being convicted). That is why I said for humanitarian purposes, they should allow the interim release of former President Duterte," she said.

Malacanang said the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) conducted a "routine" welfare check on former President Rodrigo R. Duterte in The Hague.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro declined to disclose any health-related details of Duterte saying it will be DFA, which will comment on the matter. Robina Asido/DMS
