The embassy of Japan on Monday urged its nationals to be cautious after two Japanese nationals were killed in a robbery incident in Manila last weekend.

“We express our condolences to the deceased and we are currently coordinating and confirming the details of the incident with the Philippine authorities, and are providing support to the bereaved family members of the deceased,” it said in a statement.

The two were shot Friday night by a gunman after they alighted from a taxi in Malvar Street, Malate at 10:40 p.m., the embassy said.

“Motive and background of the incident are still unknown as authorities are still investigating, but we ask that all Japanese residents, tourists, and business travelers in the country to continue to take great care to ensure their safety,” the embassy said in a notice to nationals posted on its website.

Reports said the man ordered the two to get out of the vehicle and shot them afterwards.

Their belongings were taken by the assailant, who escaped on a motorcycle with a cohort. DMS
