Senate to decide on whether to convene as impeachment court on August 6

2025/7/30 英字

The Senate will decide whether to convene as an impeachment court to hear the complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte on August 6.

''For the record, it was decided upon in a caucus that the matter would be decided upon on August 6 2025 when we open session on that date in order to afford ample and sufficient time to the members to study the 97-page Supreme Court decision excluding the concurring opinions filed by five or six additional magistrates,'' said Escudero when he opened Tuesday's plenary session.

Escudero, in a press conference earlier Tuesday, said as a lawyer he will follow the Supreme Court ruling but the Senate has to vote whether to pursue the impeachment trial.

The Supreme Court voted 13-0 to rule that the impeachment complaint against Duterte was unconstitutional. It also declared that the Senate has no jurisdiction over the case because a one year bar rule in filing impeachment complaints was violated.

The House of Representatives on February 5 filed an impeachment complaint against Duterte for culpable violation of the constitution, corruption and an alleged assassination plot vs President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Following the SC decision, the House said it would file for a motion of reconsideration before the Supreme Court. DMS
