LTFRB will not tolerate reckless driving

The Land Transportation Franchise and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) reminded drivers to stay safe during the Holy Week after President Ferdinand Marcos ordered the crackdown on recklessness.

In a forum on Tuesday, LTFRB spokesperson Ariel Inton said they will be implementing a zero tolerance policy on reckless driving, after a passenger bus mishap at the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) in Valenzuela on Tuesday evening, injuring 13 people.

“Driving a public vehicle is a public responsibility. If you are reckless, you are out because you possess danger to people’s lives. Public transport must be safe, that is non-negotiable,” Inton said.

The LTFRB suspended the bus company involved in the Valenzuela accident, with six buses of the franchise owned by Wilson Hong Sy unable to operate for 30 days.

On Monday, Marcos had released a video, reminding drivers to avoid reckless driving causing fights and accidents on the road.

"We should all follow traffic rules. We need discipline and be responsible Filipinos on the road. Don't be a kamote, there's a lot of those already," Marcos said in his video.

Meanwhile, the LTFRB said they are investigating the case of the jeepney that crashed into two other vehicles along Commonwealth Avenue, killing two and injuring 16 others.

“We are moving now?not after another accident. We’re auditing operators with repeated violations and will revoke franchises if necessary, ” LTFRB Chair Teofilo Guadiz III said in a statement.

The LTFRB is also trying to confirm the viral video which showed passengers aboard a speeding bus enroute to La Union.

"We are identifying who posted the video. We would like to ask them to provide us with the details of the bus so that we can issue a show cause order," Inton said.

The LTFRB said they will be deploying personnel to various bus stations around the country to crack down on colorum buses that may try to convince passengers to ride their vehicle during the Holy Week.

“Riding colorum vehicles for long-distance trips is dangerous. If the public knows about colorum terminals, please let the LTFRB know so that they cannot victimize other passengers," Inton added. Yzabela Velez-White/DMS
