Nearly 7,000 call for swifter justice in flood control scandal

A total of nearly seven thousand protesters converged in three key areas in Metro Manila on Sunday as they urged the government to jail people responsible for the flood control scandal.

An interfaith program was held at the People Power Monument along Edsa, Quezon City where the celebrants, led by Ramon Magsaysay Award winner Father Flavie Villanueva and Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines head Cardinal Pablo David, called for greater transparency in the investigation.

'' Reveal the truth! Return what was stolen! Jail those who killed and the corrupt! Restore the dignity of the country,'' Villanueva in his brief address at the second part of the Trillion Peso March.

David dared President Ferdinand Marcos Jr to fulfill his commitment of holding accountable those responsible for massive corruption. "To the President... our call is simple, just go to work! Stand up for what you started! Prove that you will go all out!" said David.

Protesters did not call for the resignation of Marcos but urged him to implement the anti-political dynasty provision in the Constitution through laws.

Despite brief rain in the afternoon, the almost four thousand at the People Power Monument remained until 5 pm when they slowly began to leave.

Except for some brief skirmishes which were quickly quelled, the Philippine National Police said the event were peaceful. The crowds were smaller, compared to the previous two rallies on Sept 21 and a few weeks ago in Luneta.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said: ''I think people are are starting to feel that something is happening. I think even though it it slow, I feel they can see the direction where it is headed.''

Remulla said eight have been jailed and one suspect will be recovered '' in the next few days.''

''I think pretty soon those that have been named by (former Public Works Undersecretary Roberto) Bernardo will be indicted but let us wait for the announcement of Marcos,'' added Remulla.

An unscheduled rally in Manila was held in the morning but Manila Mayor Isko Moreno did not object to it being held at Rizal Park instead of Freedom Park. The rally took place without incident.

Two areas of protest at San Sebastian College in Recto (3,000 people) and in Robinsons Galleria (150) were made but no untoward incidents were reported. DMS
