Authorities evacuated over one million persons in nine regions as Super Typhoon ''Uwan'' approached Luzon, the Office of Civil Defense said Sunday afternoon,
OCD Deputy Administrator Rafaelito Alejandro IV said ''Uwan'' ''just passed by'' the Bicol region, leaving one dead from drowning in Catanduanes and nearly all provinces without electricity.
''The typhoon is entering (Luzon) mainland and the rain band is starting to be felt,'' said Alejandro. The national police said forced evacuation is being done in some areas in Bataan and other areas in Central Luzon.
In its 5 pm bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said ''Uwan'' was located 110 kilometers north of Daet, Camarines Norte.
It had maximum winds of up to 185 kilometers per four and gusts of up to 230 kilometers per hour. It was moving west at 30 kilometers per hour.
Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No.5, the highest possible signal, is up over the southern portion of Quirino, southeastern portion of Nueva Vizcaya, northeastern portion of Nueva Ecija, central portion of Aurora, Polilio Islands and the northeastern portion of Camarines Norte, including Calaguas Islands.
The following areas are forecast by Pagasa to experience heavy rainfall or more than 200 millimeters of rain: Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, La Union, Zambales, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Quezon, Bulacan, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, and Albay.
In the same briefing, a Pagasa weather forecaster said the eyewall of ''Uwan'' is estimated at two hours away from making landfall in Aurora. He added that ''Uwan'' will be at the coastal area of Pangasinan at 2pm tomorrow
Metro Manila and other areas remains under Signal Number Three and starting Sunday night, it is forecast to experience rain of between 100 millimeters and 200 milimeters. DMS
