Marcos says impeachment against Duterte will continue to the 20th Congress

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the impeachment attempts against Vice President Sara Duterte at the Senate will likely continue to the 20th Congress.

In an interview with reporters last Tuesday, he said the Senate will not have enough time to complete the impeachment proceedings against the Vice President since the 19th Congress will adjourn sine die on June 13.

"There is no way that even if they start the trial now, that they will finish it before the new Senators come in," Marcos said.

With two session days left, it will be up to lawmakers to decide if the current impeachment complaint against Duterte will be carried over to the 20th Congress or be refiled by lawmakers.

The Senate is set to finally tackle the impeachment complaint on Wednesday.

The impeachment complaint against Duterte was transmitted by the House of Representatives to the Senate on February 5. Duterte's impeachment complaint stems from the alleged misuse of confidential funds of her and the Department of Education (DepEd), while she was running it.

Senator Robin Padilla, an ally of former President Rodrigo Duterte, the father of the Vice President, said the impeachment should end at the current Congress.

Senator Aquilino Pimentel III said there is no provision in the 1987 Constitution, which prohibits impeachment complaints spanning two successive Congresses.

Marcos said he is hopeful Senate President Francis Escudero will "peacefully" resolve the matter

"We are watching, of course, what the Senate President, Chiz Escudero, is doing to try to make it as peaceful a transition as possible from this Congress to the next," Marcos said. DMS
