Around P57 million amount of damaged crops and more than P225,000 damaged properties were recorded in a tornado that hit several barangays in Tupi, South Cotabato on Thursday afternoon.

In a Facebook post, Tupi Municipal Police Station (TMPS) stated that the tornado hit barangays Cr. Rubber, Palian, Cebuano, Lunen, Tubeng, Poblacion, and Bololmala "at approximately 2:02 pm."

Based on the progress report of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Tupi, the weather disturbance mostly affected high-value crops worth P56,675,075.40 which affected 128 farmers. 33 percent of the damaged crops came from Barangay Crossing Rubber.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Tupi stated that 132 houses were affected by the weather disturbance, with damage to properties estimated at P226,200.

MDRRMO officer Emil Sumagaysay told the Daily Manila Shimbun that Sumagaysay also confirmed that Barangays Lunen and Crossing Rubber were the most affected in the city, with most of 63 houses from Crossing Rubber and 28 houses from Lunen are partially damaged.

Meanwhile, 20 individuals sustained injuries due to tornado and road crash incidents. Two of these victims were referred to a provincial hospital for further medical attention.

Sumagaysay said the MDRRMO coordinated with the Provincial Government of South Cotabato, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Region 12, and the Office of the Vice President (OVP) for food packs to be provided to the affected families.

"The immediate concern right now is to provide assistance to the families, Small-Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and farmers affected by the tornado such as relief goods," TMPS public information officer (PIO) Police Chief Rea Luz Gatinao said in a separate phone interview.
