President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called for stronger unity among Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states on Monday, expressing deep appreciation for Malaysia’s leadership during this year’s summit, which focused on “Inclusivity and Sustainability.”
In his speech during the plenary, Marcos emphasized that inclusivity is not a byproduct of development but a fundamental pillar necessary for building resilience in an increasingly complex global landscape.
Marcos highlighted at least 10 key points, including calls for regional cooperation in addressing climate change, health crises, and economic challenges, and placed youth empowerment at the core of ASEAN’s future.
The President also underscored the importance of equipping ASEAN’s workforce for sustained economic growth, raising concerns over geopolitical tensions, trade disruptions, and climate threats ? urging institutional strength and unity in response.
“In this increasingly interconnected world, we find ourselves and our gains at risk when our current stability is challenged. Geopolitical tensions, unexpected trade barriers, and the unprecedented impact of climate change have the potential to disrupt our communities, supply chains, and remove our hard-earned progress,” Marcos said.
“Yet, by working together, strengthening our institutions, and building the resilience and capacities of our people, we can better navigate this uncertain future and turn challenges into opportunities for shared growth and stability,” he added.
The Chief Executive reiterated support for a legally binding Code of Conduct in the South China Sea, reaffirmed the Philippines’ stance against transnational crime and human trafficking, and called for increased climate financing to meet ASEAN’s climate goals.
“We underscore the urgent need to accelerate the adoption of a legally binding Code of Conduct in the South China Sea to safeguard maritime rights, promote stability, and prevent miscalculations at sea,” Marcos said.
“We commend Malaysia’s leadership in convening the Special ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meeting and welcome the consensus to avoid retaliatory measures. This measured and unified approach upholds ASEAN’s commitment to dialogue, diplomacy, and a rules-based multilateral trading system,” he added.
Before concluding his speech, Marcos highlighted ASEAN’s expanding global partnerships since 2017 and called on the bloc to remain outward-looking ? united by peace, inclusivity, and shared prosperity.
