President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will promote the Philippines’ economic interests and strengthen relationships with other member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) at the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders Meeting in South Korea from October 30 to November 2, a foreign affairs official said on Tuesday.
In a pre-departure briefing at Malacanang, Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) spokesperson Angelica Escalona said President Marcos will travel to Busan and Gyeongju, South Korea, at the invitation of President Lee Jae Myung.
“The President’s participation is centered on advancing the Philippines’ economic interests, forging deeper ties with APEC members and reaffirming our commitment to APEC’s vision of a more open, prosperous and dynamic Asia-Pacific in a rapidly transforming regional landscape,” Escalona said.
According to the DFA official, the two sessions of the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting are expected to yield four outcome documents, including the leaders’ declaration, as well as three statements on artificial intelligence (AI), demographic change, and cultural and creative industries.
“These topics reflect the priorities set by Korea as this year’s APEC host and tackle trends that impact economic growth across the region,” she explained.
Marcos will also attend the Leaders’ Dialogue with the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC).
Also included in the President’s schedule of activities is his address at the APEC CEO Summit, which brings together representatives from APEC members and top business executives to discuss key economic issues facing the region.
The President is also scheduled to meet with members of the Filipino community in Busan and hold meetings with various business leaders and executives.
Marcos will conclude his visit with the wreath laying and tree planting ceremony at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan in honor of the 7,420 Filipino soldiers who fought during the Korean War as members of the Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea. Presidential News Desk
