Floods subside in Navotas City

2025/6/30 英字

Floods subsided in Navotas City Sunday evening due to low tide but officials said engineering work to minimize floods will continue.

Navotas City Public Information Office added that the repair of the Tangos-Tanza navigational gate still continues even as the pumping station remains operational.

Floods occured after a private shipward wall collapsed on Saturday and breached temporary sandbags, allowing the Navotas River to overflow and prompting officials to order pre-emptive evacuation

The private shipyard wall collapsed at Celest Street, Barangay San Jose. Around 100 families have been evacuated.

As of 12 pm, five to seven inches of floodwaters were recorded in Barangay San Jose along M. Naval Street while it reached four to five inches in Barangay Sipac-Almacen.

In a radio interview, Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco said that the main reason for the water breach that led to the collapse is due to the ongoing construction of the Tangos-Tanza navigational gate.

"The main reason why water is entering the river from behind is because the navigational gate, the big flood gate, is not functioning", Tiangco said.

"Hopefully on Tuesday, July 1, they will test it (navigational gates)", Tiangco added.

In a separate radio interview, Public Works and Highways Secretary Manuel Bonoan said that they are working on a feasibility study with Navotas Rep.e Toby Tiangco on replacing the 30-year old Navotas floodgate following its need of rehabilitation.

Bonoan said that they are "closely monitoring" the floodgate "as it may take some time actually to find a solution to it".

“So we are working on a feasibility study on how we are going to replace it but in the meantime it's still operational", Bonoan added.Marie Manalili/DMS
