Six Filipinos injured in Israel: DFA

Six Filipinos were injured, with one in critical condition in Israel due to the ongoing missile attacks between Israel and Iran, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Monday.

In a radio interview, Philippine Ambassador to Israel Aileen Mendiola-Rau said that four of the injured were already discharged, while two were still in the hospital.

"We have one case that’s critical. We are monitoring this closely,” Mendiola-Rau said.

She added in a TV interview Monday night that a missile hit a hotel in central Tel-Aviv where 18 Filipinos were affected. ''Luckily, they are OK,'' she added.

Mendiola-Rau said that the critically injured Filipino worker's right lung is not functioning and she is ''being sustained by a certain machine that pumps in air into her bloodstream.'' ''We are assured by the hospital that they are fully on top of the situation,'' she said.

The Palace said there is no need yet for forced repatriation of Filipinos. ''It hasn't reached yet that point yet, but our agencies are ready if repatriation is needed,'' said Palace Press Office Claire Castro.

Castro said that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the DFA, Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to quickly aid the Filipinos affected by the ongoing conflict.

The DMW said its crisis alert levels in Israel, Lebanon and Jordan are being reviewed.

Israel is under Alert Level 2, which means only returning overseas Filipino workers will be allowed to be deployed. Lebanon is under Alert Level 3 while there is no alert level for Jordan.

The envoy said said that despite keeping in contact with Filipino community leaders, no talks of forced repatriation have been made, with 24 Filipinos contacting the embassy to request for repatriation. Only 13 have decided to push through.

“We don’t see ? even the other embassies of migrant labor-sending countries ? there is no evacuation being discussed at the moment,” Mendiola-Rau added. Velle White/DMS
