PNP chief relieves anti-kidnapping head

The Philippine National Police (PNP) relieved administratively the head of its anti-kidnapping group as it investigates a report about tthe rescue of a 14-year-old Chinese student who was abducted last Feb. 20.

PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said he administratively relieved Anti-Kidnapping Group director Col. Elmer Ragay following what he described as adverse news reports about the rescue operation for the boy, a student of the British School Manila in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig three days ago.

Marbil stressed the need for a thorough review of the case to address growing public scrutiny and ensure full transparency.

Marbil said the PNP will cooperate in a Senate investigation to be held next week.

An investigation by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) claimed there were discrepancies about the AKG’s version.

The report of CIDG stated the victim was fetched by his uncle and that the anti-kidnapping agents were not around.

In a previous PNP statement, it stated anti-kidnapping operatives rescued the boy who was found abandoned along Macapagal Avenue in Paranaque City.

The CIDG added that despite the efforts of the anti-kidnapping agents, it was not able to arrest any suspect.

CIDG director Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III refused to discuss the report when asked by reporters at the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City. DMS
