Senior Undersecretary of Defense Irineo Espino welcomed Ono Sho, the new Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan, during an introductory call on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing cooperation between the Philippines and Japan.
Espino expressed appreciation for the Japanese government’s prompt offer of assistance and continued support in disaster response following the onslaught of Typhoon ''Tino''. In turn, Ono extended his condolences to the victims and reaffirmed Japan’s readiness to assist affected communities.
The meeting also highlighted the increasing defense cooperation between the Philippines and Japan, particularly in capacity building, capability development, and interoperability.
Both officials acknowledged that the implementation of the Reciprocal Access Agreement has significantly enhanced coordination and interoperability between the two countries, enabling faster and more effective humanitarian operations.
The two officials reaffirmed their shared commitment to uphold international law, promote a rules-based international order, and further strengthen the enduring strategic partnership between the Philippines and Japan. DND Press Release
